Interface 2021 - Connecting UF Classes and the Global Language Community Through Virtual Exchange

Virtual exchanges between UF students and LinguaMeeting coaches in Spanish-speaking countries have become the most popular component of Lower Division Spanish courses. These virtual exchanges create a positive, collaborative environment for students, who report that they enjoy their biweekly conversations with their coach, build confidence and skills in speaking Spanish outside of the classroom, and learn about others’ cultural products, practices, and perspectives. Virtual exchange is not only for language classes – it is applicable to any discipline to help foster cultural competence and collaboration. In this presentation, we describe our experience developing a virtual exchange partnership, crafting the process for students to work with their coach and classmates before, during, and after conversations, and considering how these virtual exchanges can evolve within the curriculum. We will also encourage participants to conceptualize how they might include virtual exchange opportunities in their classes.
